Water Damage

No homeowner wants to see a leak in their home. Water damage is expensive and can cause a host of health problems to the owners in the form of mold and contamination.

Types of Water damage:

  • ·  Water Overflow : Water overflow is caused by a blocked pipe. When the pipe is blocked the water has no place to go but back the way it came causing water damage in flooring, drywall, and wood products such as wood beams and bathroom vanities. A blockage can be caused by many things, but hair, food and foreign objects are the most common. When not properly taken care of, clogs can cost thousands of dollars in both repairs to piping and replacing damaged surroundings.
  • ·  Leaks : Leaks are the product of pipes breaking down over time. Especially those pipes made from metal or clays, your pipes will break down over time and cause a gap in the joint, allowing water to spill from the pipe. This can cause damage to the interior or the exterior of a house. All pipes, regardless of if they are under a sink, hidden in a wall, or buried in your yard, have the potential to break down and leak at some point in time.
  • ·  Water Heaters : Water heaters are a modern-day necessity. We depend on them to make our lives more convenient by providing hot water with the flip of a handle. Water Heaters work by storing water inside the unit and gently heating said water to the appropriate temperature. These unites can break down over time though, causing water to leak out and damage the surrounding walls and floors. Since this is usually a hidden unit, a leaking water heater is a breeding ground for mold as well.
  • ·  Roofs : When was the last time you checked your roof for leaks? My guess is not often enough. A leaking roof can cause water damage and mold in the ceiling, hidden for years. You may notice spots on your ceilings. Your roof should be inspected yearly for leaks and potential problems.
  • ·  Ground water damage : When the rainy season hits, the potential for water damage increases. As the ground gets saturated and the roads flood, water has no place to go but into your house. Ground water damage is classified as intrusive water from either the foundation, basement walls, floors or floor drains and is not covered by home insurance.
  • ·  Sewer Water Backup : Sewer backups can happen to anyone. They are commonly caused by a clog in the pipe, but occasionally, they are caused by something more serious like a tree root in intruding on the pipe. Trees and foliage love to worm their way into sewage pipes because it is a good source of nutrients for the plants and root systems. However, leaks from these pipes and the subsequence backing up of said pipes is a serious health risk.

When is it time to call for a professional? Any time you see water where it should not be, you should consider calling in the professionals. A remediation specialist is licensed to deal with all types of water damage including:

  • ·  Category 1 : Category 1 water damages is a water leak from a sanitary water source. This may include a leak from a sink or refrigerator. This is one of the most common types of leaks. If you experience a category 1 leak, you may be able to deal with the damage yourself if caught in time.
  • ·  Category 2 : Category 2 water damage occurs when water has been contaminated by microbials that have the potential to cause sickness. This category may include, but not be limited to, sewage leaks, overflowing toilets, and clogged washing machines and dishwashers. These leaks need to be handed with care by a professional. They will cleanup and decontaminate the areas to limit your exposure to harmful bacteria.
  • ·  Category 3 : The most sever of the categories, Category 3 water damage contains a mass amount of pathogens, including toxins, fungi, and bacteria. This category is easy to recognize, as the amount of contaminants is visible to the naked eye. It is recommended to call in a professional to deal with the contamination for this category to minimize your risk of exposure.
